The Rules for the Direction of the Spirit, composed between 1628 and 1629, and published posthumously, constitute the first great philosophical text of Descartes (1596-1650). By these rules, the author seeks to explain the mode of resolution of all the questions which can arise to man, and to manifest the fundamental unity of the spirit, in a manner that announces the Discourse of the Method (1637). The method is presented as the ordering of natures, and the main operations of the mind, intuition and deduction, are exposed. Together, Descartes formulated the project of mathesis universalis, the universal science which, as a general science of order and measurement, must resolve all questions, And not only those that are mathematical in the strict sense. These are all themes which make the study of the Rules complementary to that of the Discourse on Method.
